Zip disk data recovery should be possible in the majority of cases where mechanical faults have not occurred. This article shows you how to use software to retrieve files that have been deleted, formatted or lost.

Zip disks were the forerunner to the current USB flash drives for storing large volumes of data. However, some users may still be using them and or need to retrieve files. The starting point is getting a suitable data recovery application which supports the zip disk format. Files are not stored in the same format as on Windows (i.e. fat 32) so you need to make sure your application can do a format data recovery of the zip format.

Recommended Data Recovery Software:

Remo Undelete: Works on IDE / ATA / SATA / SCSI hard disk drives, SD Cards, Memory Sticks, Zip drives and USB hard drives, All Windows OS; Free trial scan available.

Using Applications

  1. Connect your zip drive to your computer
  2. Install your data recovery application (e.g. Remo Undelete) on your computer. Launch the program and select a zip disk for analysis.
  3. The application will attempt to scan the zip drive memory to locate clusters of remaining files. These are compiled into a list of found files that are displayed back to you.
  4. Copy the files from the zip disk that you require back onto your PC.

Possible Setbacks

Even though zip disk data recovery is quite straightforward, the process can be hindered in some circumstances:

  • Mechanical faults to disks will make all software useless. Resort to contacting a data recovery specialist to try and retrieve the data directly from the memory.
  • A post format data recovery will be made more difficult if the formatting process/tool included a data cleaning sweep. Some applications will do this for data protection purposes but it effectively clears down the zip disk completely.
  • If the zip disk has continued to be used for storing files since your files were lost/deleted/formatted then there is a possibility that your new files over wrote the original stored documents. Zip disk data recovery software may only be able to locate partial fragments of your files.
