There are many types of slow laptop solutions available today ranging from free to commercial options. This article shows you some of the most common approaches to improving PC speeds.

Suggested Tools: XP Repair Pro Registry & system optimization for Windows 7, Vista & XP.

The Windows registry keys can become corrupted or faulty over time leading to exceptions, XP slow startup times and under-performing hardware (especially your modem). Use a good registry cleaner to scan the file and identify faults which can be fixed.

Clean up some extra space on the hard disk

The OS uses virtual memory to help speed up processing applications. Virtual memory is actually maintained by the paging file which uses empty space your hard disk, so if this decreases below 10% of your free drive space then virtual memory allocation decreases and performance degrades. Clear out extra space using Disk Cleanup and by moving files onto an external HDD.

Reduce the amount of fragmentation of your files on hard drive memory

All documents are stored to the hard drive as fragments located around the disk. This can cause slow laptop performance every time the file is read (due to multiple disk read access commands). Use a disk defragmenter [accessories/system tools/disk defragmenter] to reorder the fragments and speed up access times.

Tweak the Performance options

All versions of the Windows OS allow you to improve slow laptop speeds by tuning different performance settings [control panel, system, advanced, performance settings]. In XP, you can improve the maximum page file size (to allocate more virtual memory), reduce the number of visual effects (help speed up OS performance on old laptops or PCs with low quality graphics cards) and reprioritize memory allocation (system versus programs).

Keep your programs up-to-date

Software applications are always being released with small bugs in them. These are then fixed as they are identified and included in patch updates. You can quickly improve performance of specific applications by checking for updates directly on their website. Most hardware and operating system programs can be checked for updates using the Windows update service.
