By following some regular computer repair and maintenance techniques, it should be possible to improve slow laptop performance. If you find your computer running slow repeatedly then this article should help you focus in on the three main areas where you can make improvements.

Using utilities as part of regular computer repair and maintenance

It is possible to use Windows utilities and commercial applications to improve the performance of your disks and registry files as follows:

  • Run a disk defragmenter tool every 3 to 4 weeks. This will take some time to complete on the first occasion it is run, but subsequent scans should prove to be a lot faster. The utility can help stop your computer running very slow by reordering file fragments on the disk to improve read access times.
  • Check your Windows registry for faults/corruption. Any key corruption can lead to errors, blue screen exceptions and performance hits. Use a registry cleaner or an online PC repair application, such as XP Repair Pro, to automate these repairs.

Spring cleaning of programs and files on your slow laptop

You may find your laptop running very slow simply because there are too many files or programs either on the disk are running at any one time.

  • Clean out your e-mail folders. If you find your computer running slow when running Outlook or other client based e-mail applications then this can often be due to the large size of e-mail folders. Archive your old files and back them up to CD if necessary.
  • Try to reduce the amount of programs running at any one time. You can use the task manager (or Resmon in Windows 7) to check the memory usage of applications on the processes tab. Close down background applications you are not using and update any programs you identify as using a lot of RAM (the latest patch updates will often include performance improvements that help stop your laptop running slow).
  • Reduce the number of browser add-ons that you have enabled. Any computer running very slow while online could be straining due to the number of add-ons you have installed on the browser as these can use a lot of bandwidth and require the browser to cache a lot of data (which in turn uses a lot of RAM).
  • Run the Disk Cleanup utility (accessories, system tools) to automate the process of clearing out temporary files and cookies.

Don’t let viruses or spyware get on your computer

It stands to reason that viruses can corrupt system programs and registry key settings that leads to program exceptions. These problems can also cause hardware conflicts and application faults that lead to slow laptop performance.

  • Set up your anti-virus program to check for virus definition updates on a regular basis.
  • Run an anti-virus scan on your hard disk and external memory devices as often as possible. If you find your laptop running slow even when you have shut down the majority of applications that may well be a virus or malware application is running in the background. For example, trojan virus removal is essential as some Trojan viruses can run your laptop as e-mail spammers (that use a lot of RAM and Internet bandwidth).

Of course, it is also worth mentioning that any slow laptop can be dramatically improved by adding/upgrading the RAM memory. If you find your laptop running very slow then it may be simply straining to run applications due to a lack of available RAM memory. Current chip prices are quite cheap so this an economical route to take, and can easily be done by a PC repair shop or upgraded by yourself.
