Computer performance can deteriorate over time due to virus damage, the disk filling up, adverse application changes, etc. This article shows how to make your PC run faster without having to resort to installing more RAM or upgrading the operating system, by simply using regular computer repair and maintenance techniques.

Suggested tools:

  • Regtool: Registry repair/optimization and disk defragmentation utility in one.

How to make your PC run faster

The objective of each of these tasks is to make your computer run faster by reducing the amount of RAM and CPU being used and to improve the performance of existing hardware components (in particular, the hard disk):

  • Reduce the number of running applications: There is a natural limit to how many programs can be running at any one time due to the limited resources (CPU/RAM) on your PC. Use the Task Manager and Services applications to identify which programs are using the most amount of RAM. Disable any non-essential programs which you are happy to do without.
  • Repair registry corruption: The Windows registry keeps configuration settings for all programs and users of your PC and can develop faults and non-optimum settings as a result of application changes and viruses. Use a registry cleaner to repair faults.
  • Keep your applications up to date: Patch updates and new versions of applications will invariably perform better than older editions as bugs are found and repaired by the software development teams. Use Windows update service to keep your operating system and device drivers up to date. Third-party applications can be checked for updates directly via their file menu/websites. This approach can also perform a free registry fix simply by overwriting damaged/corrupted key settings.
  • Leave some free space on the disk for virtual memory: The OS uses virtual memory to run applications and operating system programs. The amount of virtual memory is dictated by the page file which is stored on your hard disk in whatever empty space is available. It is recommended to keep at least 10% of the hard drive free for this purpose. This should be easy to do by uninstalling old applications and using the Disk Cleanup application to remove temp files and cookies. Having more free space will make your computer faster as the virtual memory size expands to makes use of the extra space.
  • Isolate and remove viruses rapidly: Any type of virus (e.g. malware, adware, trojan viruses, etc) has the potential of corrupting OS programs and the registry file as well as potentially running in the background using up CPU and bandwidth. You can make computer run faster by keeping your anti-virus software up to date and scanning for viruses as often as possible.
  • Defragment the hard disk each month: Each document you store is saved as fragments in different sectors of the hard drive in order to make the best use of whatever free space there is. This will however slow down file reading performance and is something that will impact all OS programs and third-party applications. Running a disk defragmentation utility will make your computer run faster by helping to sequentially reorder fragments of data so that less access calls are required. The registry cleaner Regtool has an advanced defragmentation utility as part of its capabilities.

Once you know how to make your PC run faster on the first occasion, it becomes easier to run these tasks every few weeks/months. It is critical to run virus checks on a regular basis and most people will already have the Windows update scheduled to update their system automatically. However, disk defragmentation is something which is overlooked on many occasions and should really be run on a monthly basis.
