In this article I’ll show you how to do a zip disk data recovery in a few simple steps. The process begins with checking for mechanical faults since omitting this could lead to further data loss.

Whether you are trying to find deleted files or are doing a post format data recovery software utility should be able to help find lost files in the zip disk in the majority of cases. However, all zip disks may have developed faults over time due to magnetic fields, damage to the read/write heads or contamination. For this reason, start out with doing mechanical checks of your reader and the zip disk.

Here’s the process for checking mechanical faults:

  1. Test your zip reader with a number of different disks. Make sure that is capable of reading files. You want to make sure that it is not a faulty reader/hardware causing the problem.
  2. An optional test is to try using the zip disk you want to scan in a secondary zip reader. This might identify if there are specific problems with your own zip reader. Backup the files via the secondary zip reader to a USB flash drive in order to get your files back.
  3. Check the zip disk casing/enclosure for signs of damage or faults. It should be apparent if there is water damage or contamination (e.g. dust). The sound of loose components inside could indicate there is damage to the read/write heads which should be left up to the experts to repair.

Using zip disk data recovery software:

  1. Download and install your chosen application onto your computer. One suggested tool is Remo Undelete which can handle a number of different memory formats and can also do a format data recovery.
  2. Connect your zip drive to the computer and insert the zip disk you want to analyze.
  3. Launch the application and select the zip drive partition for analysis. Start a scan.
  4. The application will compile a list of found files which you can then copy back onto the computer.

Recommended Data Recovery Software: Remo Undelete works on IDE / ATA / SATA / SCSI hard disk drives, SD Cards, Memory Sticks, Zip drives and USB hard drives, All Windows OS; Free trial scan available.
